The channel succeeds Direct 8, sold to the Canal+ group by the Bolloré group The channel is renamed C8 on September 5, 2016 at 6:43 a.m. The name of Channel 8 incorporates the prefix "Canal" common to the other channels of the group, CStar (formerly D17) and CNews (formerly iTélé). The new names of the three free-to-air channels bring them closer to the Canal+ group and its toll channels.
